A striking and increasingly uncommon example of traditional African sculpture, this Ékoi / Ejagham-style male figure from Nigeria’s Cross River region captivates with its powerful silhouette, sculptural sophistication, and richly aged surface. Carved from exotic hardwood and covered with leather, the figure embodies the distinctive artistic traditions of the region, where material, form, and spiritual expression combine to create objects of remarkable presence.
The sculpture is distinguished by its extraordinary headdress, featuring four prominent spiral braids that curl symmetrically outward, framing the head with an almost architectural elegance. This elaborate arrangement creates a dynamic contrast with the figure’s elongated neck, slender torso, rounded abdomen, and firmly modelled limbs. The carefully articulated facial features, subtly defined eyes and mouth, and delicately shaped hands and feet reveal the sculptor’s attention to detail and mastery of stylised human anatomy.
The dark brown and reddish patina is particularly compelling. Developed over time, the surface displays nuanced variations of colour, with warm reddish highlights emerging through the deeper, almost black tones. Traces of white natural pigments remain visible, offering a glimpse of the figure’s original decorative treatment. The leather covering, together with the exposed wood and richly textured surface, lends the sculpture a tactile, organic character. Its natural irregularities, age-related wear, and traces of wood-boring insects further testify to its material history and individual character.
The quality of the carving lies not in polished perfection, but in the confident treatment of volume, the expressive balance between the head and body, and the extraordinary silhouette created by the spiralling headdress. The contrast between the compact facial features and the elongated proportions gives the figure a distinctive presence, equally compelling when viewed from a distance or examined closely.
Dating probably to the mid-20th century, this rare and characterful work offers collectors of African art an evocative example of the sculptural heritage of the Cross River region. Its unusual four-spiral coiffure, combination of wood and leather, and beautifully weathered reddish-brown surface make it a particularly distinctive decorative and ethnographic object.
