The Rolex GMT-Master was born in 1955 out of a collaboration with Pan American Airways to create a tool watch for pilots navigating long-haul flights across multiple time zones. Its most defining feature was the rotatable 24-hour bezel, paired with an additional GMT hand, allowing the wearer to simultaneously track two time zones—a vital innovation during the golden age of air travel.
Over the decades, the GMT-Master evolved to become one of Rolex’s most iconic timepieces, beloved by aviators, globetrotters, and collectors alike. Among its many variations, the Pepsi bezel, so-called for its red and blue color scheme, remains the most celebrated.
Introduced in 1989, the GMT-Master II Ref. 16710 carried the legacy of the original GMT-Master but with modernized features that made it even more versatile. Rolex equipped the 16710 with a caliber 3185 automatic movement, offering the ability to adjust the local hour hand independently—a hallmark of the GMT-Master II line.
The watch retained the signature bidirectional bezel, allowing the user to track a third time zone by aligning the bezel with the 24-hour hand. The bezel insert on the Ref. 16710 was crafted from anodized aluminum, which gave the Pepsi color scheme a vibrant yet understated matte finish.
This model was available with a variety of bezel color options, but the Pepsi bezel—a tribute to the original GMT-Master Ref. 6542—remained a collector favorite.
