Every 25 years or so, Switzerland holds a national exhibition that brings its citizens together around a snapshot of the country and its concerns. The fifth Swiss national exhibition, Expo 64 was held from 30 April to 25 October 1964 in Lausanne, and more specifically in Vidy. The Swiss Way, the backbone of Expo 64, linked eight sectors around a vision of Switzerland that was both futuristic and traditional.

Officially, the first national exhibition was held in Zurich in 1883. Subsequent exhibitions were held in Geneva in 1896, in Berne in 1914, in Zurich in 1939, in Lausanne in 1964, and most recently in 2002 in the Three Lakes region and the towns of Biel, Yverdon-Les-Bains, Neuchâtel and Murten.
