Rare and very decorative fine ancient African Art work

Comes from a noble Swiss private collection.

The Lega people originated in what is today Uganda and started to migrate from there to their present location in the 16th century.

Lega masks, created by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, hold significant cultural and symbolic importance. These masks were not merely decorative but served as essential components of the Lega people's social, educational, and ritual systems, particularly within the Bwami society, a hierarchical initiation society central to their way of life.

Lega masks were primarily used in ceremonies associated with the Bwami society, which aimed to teach moral and social values.
The masks symbolized lessons, virtues, and principles, such as wisdom, justice, humility, and community harmony.
They were presented during initiation ceremonies to guide members through moral instruction and life lessons.

The masks were believed to embody ancestral spirits or represent mythical beings.
They played a role in rituals that honored ancestors or sought spiritual guidance and protection.

Types of Lega Masks
Lukwakongo masks: Often used in higher-level Bwami ceremonies.
Kayamba masks: Smaller masks worn as pendants or displayed as emblems of achievement.

Today, Lega masks are highly valued as cultural artifacts and works of art. While their original ritual context may no longer be practiced universally, they remain symbols of Lega heritage and moral philosophy.
