Born 26 September 1784 in Le Locle (Canton of Neuchâtel), Grosclaude first trained between 1803-1805 in Geneva under a Dutch painter (name not well documented), then moved to Paris in 1805-1807 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Baptiste Regnault. This training included studying classical and contemporary art, as well as making copies in the Louvre.
After returning to Geneva, he established himself as a portrait painter and gained a solid reputation. Over time he shifted toward genre scenes—scenes of everyday life—and later also historical and religious subjects. He exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1827; over the years he won several medals: third-class in 1835, second-class in 1838, and first-class in 1845.
Grosclaude’s style is refined, with careful technique. His portraits were “à la mode” (fashionable), often polished and elegant. In his genre scenes he often portrayed moral or sentimental themes, with attention to atmosphere and character. Examples of his works include Portrait de Mademoiselle Mayor (1832), Le Buveur, La Rade de Genève, Paysage d’hiver, L’Engagé volontaire, etc.
He was named an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1826. He also attracted commissions from prominent patrons, including Baron James de Rothschild. As a teacher, he instructed, among others, Fritz Zuber-Bühler and François Bocion; his son Louis-Frédéric also became a painter under his tutelage.
He divided his time between Paris and Swiss locations (Neuchâtel, Geneva). After his peak success during his lifetime, his reputation and recognition declined somewhat after his death in Paris on 11 December 1869.
