Born in Shanghai in 1932 into an artistic family, Li Ai Vee (also spelled Li Ai-Vee) was immersed in painting from an early age. She studied under some of modern China’s most luminous masters — including Lin Fengmian, Lu Yifei, and even Zhang Daqian — blending their poetic lineage with her own emerging voice

In the 1950s, Li Ai Vee embarked on a spiritual and artistic pilgrimage to Japan, where she trained under Zen master Rinzai Yamada Mumon Rōshi and, in 1954, adorned the sliding doors of the Hiroshima Memorial with delicate bamboo designs — an act of art and remembrance

She settled in Switzerland in 1958, eventually establishing her atelier in Blonay’s chalet “Yu-Lan”. Surrounded by bamboo forests and Asian artifacts, she continued her craft with serene devotion until passing in 2021

Her works are deeply lyrical — often depicting flowers, birds, herons, bamboo, and lotus motifs rendered on paper in elegant brushwork. Many pieces are hand-signed with seals and mounted in traditional scroll formats, echoing the masters who inspired her.

Rooted in Chinese ink tradition yet enriched by Zen poetry and Swiss serenity, her works are compelling for collectors seeking harmony, nature, and elegance through the art of Li Ai Vee.
