Bearing the Star of David

The purpose of the medal was to commemorate what Spain described as the “happy conclusion” of its military action in the northern zone of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco.

The date 1909–1927 on the medal is important: it commemorates almost two decades of Spanish military campaigns in northern Morocco.

And why the Star of David?

The official 1927 decree explicitly specifies that the centre of the ribbon should carry:

“a six-pointed star formed by two equal superimposed equilateral triangles.”

The decree itself, however, does not explain why this symbol was chosen

We assume that the symbolism likely reflected the multi-religious and multicultural character of Spanish Morocco: the design combines a clear Islamic reference—the crescent on the medal and green on the ribbon—with the six-pointed star, a symbol strongly associated with Judaism, alongside Spanish royal and national symbols.
