Historical Cherifian Military Merit Medal, established in 1910, made of silver and enamel
One of the more important and interesting Moroccan military decorations of the early 20th century.
It was established in 1910 by Sultan Moulay Abdelhafid (Moulay Hafid). The term Chérifien refers to the Sharifian monarchy of Morocco, whose sovereign claimed descent from the Prophet Muhammad. The decoration was created during a particularly turbulent period in Moroccan history, shortly before the establishment of the French and Spanish Protectorates in 1912.
Despite often being called a médaille, it was actually an order of merit, originally of a single class. The Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération describes it as a rare decoration and, in its original form, as the highest Sharifian military distinction.
The decoration is particularly beautiful because it combines Moroccan royal, Islamic and military symbolism.
