In excellent working condition for its age
A creation of exceptional artistry and mechanical poetry, this Gübelin “Philosopher’s” Large Mystery Clock from circa 1950 represents one of the most captivating expressions of mid-century Swiss horological ingenuity. Rarely encountered on the market—and even more seldom preserved in such harmonious condition—this remarkable piece embodies the refined craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility for which Gübelin has long been celebrated.
At first glance, the clock seduces with its serene, otherworldly presence. The dial, framed by a luminous gilt bezel, appears almost to float—its surface a polished mirror of warm gold tones. Roman numerals encircle the perimeter with elegant symmetry, while at the heart of this enigmatic stage stands the clock’s defining marvel: a beautifully sculpted, gold-toned figure reminiscent of a philosopher or seeker, bearing a delicate staff that becomes the “mystery” hand.
In motion, this figure glides with ethereal smoothness, creating the illusion of movement without mechanical origin—an achievement requiring a sophisticated hidden mechanism and a level of craftsmanship few maisons dared to attempt. The result is a living artwork: time indicated not merely by hands but by the graceful gesture of a miniature sculpture.
The substantial case, with its finely textured body and distinctive arched feet, further reinforces the sense of rarity. It is both decorative object and mechanical wonder—an embodiment of post-war luxury, where ingenuity and beauty were not separate pursuits but inseparable ideals.
Clocks of this type, scale, and execution from Gübelin are celebrated among collectors for their extreme scarcity, with production numbers believed to be very limited and surviving examples even fewer. Each was conceived not simply as a timekeeper, but as a symbol of contemplation, refinement, and technical mastery.
This immaculate piece stands today as a testament to the maison's artistic daring and to the enduring allure of the “mystery clock”—an object designed as much to inspire wonder as to mark the passing hours.
This elegant table clock features a beautifully restored brass dial. During the light restoration process, the dial was carefully repolished to bring back its original texture, shine, and warm golden tone.
As is sometimes the case with vintage brass surfaces, the repolishing combined with a natural chemical reaction caused the original Gübelin signature to fade. This is a known and documented phenomenon on mid-century brass dials, especially when the signature was applied superficially.
Importantly, the clock was originally signed Gübelin, and we gladly provide the original pre-restoration photo clearly showing the authentic Gübelin signature. This guarantees full transparency and preserves the provenance of the piece.
The dial now presents a clean, elegant, and harmonious aesthetic, while the provenance remains fully documented—offering the buyer both the beauty of a refreshed vintage clock and the reassurance of a genuine Gübelin-associated piece.
