The double signed timepieces are highly sought after by collectors due to their extreme rarity.
For instance, an Art Deco nephrite, kingfisher feather, enamel, and diamond 'Borne' strut clock by Cartier, circa 1926, sold for CHF 63,000 on November 7, 2023, at Christie's in Geneva.
During the early 1900s, Cartier retailed a variety of watches made by other esteemed manufacturers, including Longines. These timepieces would feature both brands' names on the dial. These watches were produced in small quantities, often as special orders for Cartier’s elite clientele.
While Cartier was renowned for its in-house creations like the Tank and Santos, collaborating with respected Swiss manufacturers like Longines allowed Cartier to offer a wider range of high-quality timepieces to their discerning clientele.
Double-signed Cartier-Longines watches are incredibly rare today, making them highly sought after by collectors. The combination of two prestigious names on a single timepiece adds a layer of historical significance and exclusivity that few other watches can match.
For collectors, these watches are not only a testament to fine watchmaking but also to the retail practices and cultural exchanges of the early 20th century. They embody a timeless elegance that resonates with those who appreciate the artistry and heritage of horology.
Highly collectable!
A very small (4 cm!) enameled Cartier from this period was sold at Christies at 18'750 Chf in 2020 (last picture).
