Margaret Scobie (1948–2024) was a distinguished Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region in Central Australia. Renowned for her vibrant depictions of traditional Dreamings, she was part of a celebrated artistic lineage that includes her aunt Emily Kame Kngwarreye and cousins Gloria, Kathleen, and Ada Petyarre.
Born at Woola Downs, Scobie was introduced to painting through Awelye ceremonies—women's rituals involving body painting with ochre to honor ancestral Dreamings. These ceremonies deeply influenced her artistic themes
Bush Medicine Leaves: Depicting medicinal plants used in traditional healing practices.
Honey Ant Dreaming: Symbolizing sustenance and community.
Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming: Reflecting spiritual connections to the land.
Her "Bush Medicine Leaves" series is particularly celebrated for its dynamic brushwork and rich coloration, conveying the movement of leaves in the desert wind. These works pay homage to the healing practices of Aboriginal women, who boil specific leaves with kangaroo resin to create medicinal pastes for treating various ailments
